Not Recommended for a Happy Healthy Hair:
For people looking for wholly organic products for hair care the below listed ten chemicals should be avoided.
1. Petrolatum
— Most commonly known as petroleum jelly is a mineral oil which is a derivative used for its emollient properties in most of the cosmetics mainly because it is unbelievably cheap. It interferes with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to chapping and dryness and creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate. It has zero nutrient value for the skin.
2. Diazolidinyl Urea and Imidazolidinyl Urea
— They are preservatives and are the primary cause of contact dermatitis. These chemicals do not have a good antifungal agent and must be combined with any other preservative. The trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. These chemicals release formaldehyde, which is again toxic.
3. PVP/VA Copolymer
— This is a petroleum-derived chemical which is used in hairsprays, styling aids and other cosmetics. It is toxic and found to damage lungs of sensitive persons if inhaled.
4. Propylene Glycol
— This is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. It is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. It causes allergic reactions, hives and eczema. This strong skin irritant can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.
5. Synthetic Colors
— These colors are carcinogenic. It will be labeled as AB&E or G&C, followed by a color and its number. Example: AB&E Blue No. 4 / G&C Purple No. 8.
6. Stearalkonium Chloride
— This is a quaternary ammonium compound mostly used in conditioners and creams. It is manufactured by the fabric industry as a fabric softener which is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas when compared to proteins or herbals, which are beneficial to the hair. It causes allergic reactions and is very toxic.
7. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Paraben
— They are inhibitors of microbial growth used to extend shelf life of products. They cause many allergic reactions and skin rashes as they are weakly estrogenic absorbed by the body through the skin. They are highly toxic.
8. Synthetic Fragrances
— These cause headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, and skin irritation.
9. Diethanolamine, Triethanolamine
— These are used as emulsifiers and/or foaming agents in cosmetics. They cause allergic reactions, eye irritation and dryness of hair, skin mucous membranes. They are ammonia compounds and forms cancer-causing nitrosamines when in contact with nitrates.
10. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
— This is a derivative of petroleum which is a harsh and cheap detergent used in soaps and shampoos for its cleansing and foam-building properties. It is rapidly absorbed and retained in the eyes, brain, heart and liver, which may result in harmful long-term effects. Causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff leading to hair loss, skin rashes and other allergic reactions.
